How To Survive London's Underground

London is famous for its public transport and more importantly the underground. We're here to give you some advice for tackling the morning rush and inevitably the dreaded delays. Whether you're a born and bred Londoner or in need of some guidance. Everyone can benefit from reading these next few tips as sometimes we fall into the easy routine of the rush and we forget to use these clever little hacks.

        1. Plan Your Journey!
We cannot stress this enough; if you want to have a relaxed morning you should plan your journey! More often than not, the train and tube lines will be delayed or canceled. This can really put a negative start on your day, and in turn, your whole week! However, it is simpler than it sounds. There are so many resources out there to assist you. For example; the TfL website has live information for you to view, along with many apps. You may be thinking that this won't help you if you are underground, but you no longer have to worry as Wifi Extra now provide WiFi on the underground. It is a perfect solution to ease those delays and find other alternatives, quicker!

        2. Give Up Your Seat

As you can see these tips do include some basic etiquette. If someone less able than you gets on a full tube/train, let them have your seat. Whether it is an elderly person, a pregnant woman, or a disabled person; doing this helps to ease congestion.

        3. Wait For The Next Train (and move down!)
For those of you who are regulars on the tube, you probably hear these words multiple times a day. The warden asking you to move down inside the carriage and to wait for the next train. I'll let you in on a secret, they're right! Even though they say it all day long, there is a method in their madness. Simply, move down inside the carriage when possible. If you are traveling in the rush hour, the tubes run every minute. With this in mind, please remember there is no need to cramp onto the tube.

        4. Check You Have The Right Ticket
There is nothing more frustrating when you are commuting to work; in a standstill of traffic at the tube barriers because someone has the wrong ticket or their ticket isn't even working. Make sure you have this sorted before you travel, and research to make sure you're getting the most for your money! Many people often just use pay as you go on their bank or oyster card but this isn't always the cheapest option. Invest your time looking into monthly or yearly travel cards, these can really save you money in the long run.

        5. Student Discount
If you are a student and you're paying standard adult prices, stop! You can get 30% off your travel if you sign up today. Remember this is for apprentices too! For example; for zone 1-3 travel is £153.60 per month. If you are a student, you will only pay £107.52! This is a major discount; you won't be a student forever, so head to TFL and claim your card.

        6. Keep Right
When underground, there are certain rules you need to follow. A big one, and listen closely, this is important, is the rule of the escalator. Whenever you travel make sure you are standing on the right and walking on the left. If you are one of those people who deliberately stand on the left, I would advise you do otherwise. Rush hour is crazy enough as it is, then add people getting in your way and making you late. We can end up with some very angry travelers.

        7. Avoid Busy Stations
There are some stations that are inevitably going to be busy; Oxford Circus, Victoria, and Kings Cross to name but a few. To tackle this, you can walk between stations or stay in the area for longer and miss the rush! Between 5pm and 6pm is when stations like the ones above will be at the peak busiest.

        8. Entertainment
I know what you're thinking; why is entertainment necessary? I will tell you why. Even though we find ourselves with Wifi in the underground now, it often isn't going to be very fast. Usually, at most stations, you will find newspaper stands or even people handing them out. You can get your daily headlines in a flash. What's better is that it is completely free! So grab a copy today and make sure to pick up your rubbish before you leave the train!

That is, unfortunately, the end of our list. We hope you have found some useful tips. Why not drop us a comment and tell us about your tube experiences!
