Pancake Day in London!

Whether you like your pancakes sweet or savoury, covered in Nutella, or maple syrup, we’re just around the corner from Pancake Day so make your mind up! There will be some perfect pancake tosses, maybe some not so perfect ones and possibly some on the floor too. Pancake Day has an official name and that is Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday is a traditional feast day which marks the last day before Lent, traditionally a period of abstinence, that can often involve clearing your cupboards of fats, sugars, eggs, and more. So the easiest way to use up these ingredients comes in the form of pancakes. So, London has taken the opportunity to use Shrove Tuesday to make some of the best pancakes and have some fun too. This year Pancake Day will be on Tuesday the 25th of February, however some places around London have fun pancake related events across this weekend coming too. We’ve got vegan and gluten-free pancakes covered too, so don’t worry!

Starting off with some of the fun and festivities there has been a long tradition of Pancake Day Races across London to raise money for charity. Which involves holding a pancake in a pan, and having to flip it whilst running around obstacle courses, and whoever gets the fastest time wins! Greenwich hosts a Pancake race on Saturday the 22nd and on Pancake Day so you’ve got two opportunities to win! If you want to be a spectator then you don’t need to book a ticket and you can cheer everyone on from the sidelines.  However if you want a chance at that medal, whether on your own or as part of a tyam then you’ll need to book in advance to make sure you get your space! Fancy dress is encouraged too, so have fun dressing up and watching people run around like crazy with pancakes. It sounds like a completely normal day in London to me. If that’s not enough pancake races to you though, Borough Market and Leadenhall Market are also holding an event to raise money for charity too.

Once you’ve had enough of the races, you might be a bit peckish, so we’ve got a few spots for you to fill that pancake hole in your heart, and stomach. Starting with The Lamb Tavern, they are giving away 500 free pancakes on the 25th. You don’t need to take part in their Leadenhall Market event to get one either. However if you want a chance of getting one you may want to head there early as they start giving them out at 12:30pm, and as you can imagine, they go quick!

There was no way we couldn’t feature this place on our list about pancakes. ‘Where The Pancakes Are’ in London Bridge is a wonderful place that does every type of pancake you could imagine. We have American, French, Dutch, vegan, and more, you name it, and they’ll be able to make it for you. They’ll be serving their favourite stacks that include some great combinations. There’s pear and caramel, blueberries, and bacon, and the classic lemon and sugar. As it’s a special day they'll have cocktails too and will be open until 9:30pm.

Finally heading over to The Breakfast Club, They usually love to do some crazy ideas for Pancake Day and this year is no different. In a homage to true British pub food they’ve decided to serve gammon, egg, pineapple, and chips pancake. Yeah you heard that right, a pub pancake. We’re just hoping it tastes good. If you don’t fancy such a crazy idea they also have their tasty lemon meringue mess pancake too! If after all of these pancakes you still don’t think you;ve gotten enough in then you can take on their twelve stack pancake challenge! There's no time limit, as long as you do it alone, you get them for free!

Hopefully you can enjoy Pancake Day all across London, and if you don’t fancy going out, you can make all of your pancakes at home, considering every shop has pushed all of their ingredients for it to the front, you can even buy the straight pancake mix to make it as easy for you as possible!
