DriveNow is a partnership between BMW and Sixt that provides car sharing services in cities in Europe and North America. The DriveNow service began in Munich Germany in June 2011. As of November 2014, DriveNow operates over 2,400 vehicles, which serve seven cities worldwide including London, with over 330,000 customers.
It is a new way to share a lower emissions vehicle, therefore the UK government fully supports this initiative.
The company charges a base fee for the first 30 minutes of usage, followed by a per minute rate for every minute afterwards. Discounted rates for parked car, multi-hour usage and daily usage are also available and applied automatically. In addition, there is a one-time registration fee. The rates are all-inclusive and cover rental, fuel, insurance, parking and maintenance. In most cities, DriveNow vehicles can park in either specially designated parking spots, or in standard parking areas, with a special permit from the city
There is an ‘app’ for mobile devices, to allow users to locate and reserve vehicles. When reserving a car online, the customers are able to see the car's fuel or the battery state, so if the customer wants to go for a long drive, they can find the best vehicle for that trip.
The service is very easy to use DriveNow customers open the app on their phone, find the nearest car, unlock it through the app and go. At the end of the trip, the use just locates the nearest available free parking space, locks the car using the app, and the journey is complete.
DriveNow operates a variety of gasoline-powered BMW 1 Series, BMW X1 and Mini vehicles and the electric-powered BMW ActiveE.
